A brief description of sled dog breeds may be helpful in understanding the sport of dogsledding. Alaskan huskies are a mixed breed of Siberian husky, hound and in some case Labrador retrievers. They are bred for speed and are highly desirable for racing, especially sprint. Many consider them the "thoroughbreds" of sled dogs.

Siberian huskies come from thousands of years of breeding and natural selection has produced this medium sized, highly energetic dog. They are best suited for light loads over long distances.

Alaskan Malamutes are considered freighting dogs. They are known for endurance and incredible strength but tend to run at a much slower pace. They are known as the "draft horse" of sled dogs.

Canadian Inuit dogs come from the northern coastal regions of Alaska and Canada. They are bred to pull freight sleds and hunt. Considered dogs of great endurance but also have the balance of toughness and strength.

Yellow Snow Kennels is home to 27 sled dogs ranging from Alaskans, Canadian Inuit and Siberian huskies. The dogs have been adopted over a four year period after a long search for experienced, compatible, and people friendly dogs. The dogs come from New Hampshire, New York, Michigan, Minnesota, Virginia and Maryland. As with humans, each dog has a unique personality, individual character traits, and some come with their own opinion of how the team should run.
